Paamiut is the southernmost town in the Capital Region, known for beautiful colonial architecture and Greenland's largest population of sea eagles
Founded in 1742 as the colony of Frederikshaab, Paamiut is Greenland's eighth-largest town with approximately 1,300 inhabitants. Today, the population lives primarily from fishing, and therefore, the town is home to maritime education. In the past, trade in skins and whale products was an important source of income, and the town was known for its soapstone artists. Paamiut is located on a peninsula with impressive mountain views. Greenland's churches are generally very beautiful, and one of the most beautiful is the one in Paamiut. It is inspired by the Norwegian stave churches' architecture and has fantastic acoustics. The museum is also worth a visit with its exhibitions of local handicrafts and pictures from the whaling era. Whale watching is still possible, and it's also a true fishing and angling paradise. Paamiut's hinterland has nature trails that are a thousand years old and up to 50 kilometers long. Finally, Paamiut is also home to Greenland's largest population of protected sea eagles.
