Herrnhut House

Herrnhut House

Built by the Moravian Brotherhood, this beautiful building has served as church and university, among other things.
The Moravian Brotherhood had a huge Christian influence on Greenland. They arrived here in 1733. When Hans Egede, who colonized Greenland in 1721, was working in Greenland, there were only two major protestant missionary efforts worldwide: the Danish Mission set up by Egede and the Moravian Brotherhood which originated in Hernnhut in Northern Germany. In 1747, the Moravian Brotherhood could open the doors to the beautiful Herrnhut House, built from timber imported from Europe. According to contemporary sources, the local Greenlanders looked at this building with great awe: "If something this beautiful could exist in this life, imagine what the afterlife would be!" The missionary station was later turned into the first University of Greenland.
