Sermitsiaq

Sermitsiaq

The most iconic of Nuuk's landmarks, this beautiful mountain is one of the most famous and photographed mountains in Greenland
Sermitsiaq is a 1,210-meter-tall mountain 15 kilometers north of Nuuk and one of the iconic landmarks of the area. The mountain is located in the center of an island of the same name in the Nuuk Fjord system. Its summit is crowned by a sharp ridge, from which three summits emerge. They resemble a saddle, and as is quite common in Greenland, we name a place from what it looks like. Hence the name Sadelø (Saddle Island) in Danish. The south side of the mountain is quite steep, whereas the north side is covered with glaciers. It also boasts a waterfall that is quite a tourist attraction. Sermitsiaq, one of our two national newspapers, is named after the mountain.
