Qullissat was Greenland's largest mining town until it closed down due to coal depletion. The closure caused the inhabitants to move to other towns, leaving a wound in the Greenlandic soul. A tsunami in 2000 destroyed many houses, but today Qullissat is becoming a popular summer resort. The closure of Qullissat caused much heartache and social problems, and notable inhabitants included Greenland's former premier, Kuupik Kleist, and artist Aka Høegh.
