Settlement of Ilimanaq

A small settlement with historical charm, Ilimanaq is located 15km south of Ilulissat. It has colonial buildings, a church, and a strong hunter's culture.

Located 15 kilometers south of Ilulissat, you´ll find Ilimanaq with its small population of approximately 50 residents. Previously known as Claushavn, it was named after Klaes Pietersz Thorp, a Dutch whaling skipper who operated in the Disco Bay from 1719 to 1732. During that era, this region flourished as Greenland's most populated area. Ilimanaq has some of the oldest colonial buildings, including a beautifully renovated church from 1908. Additionally, you'll find a fish house, warehouses, former coal storage, and a blubber boiling plant, all adding to the historical charm. Despite being one of Disco Bay's smallest settlements, Ilimanaq exudes warmth through its kind-hearted residents. The traditional hunter's culture remains deeply ingrained in Greenlandic life, as evidenced in the settlements. Witness the early morning departure of hunters setting sail, returning later with their bounties of seals, fish, and more from the sea.
