Kangerlussuatsiaq, the Eternity Fjord, is located in West Greenland, with its mouth at the settlement of Kangaamiut north of Maniitsoq. The fjord extends roughly 100 kilometers eastward inland from the waters of Ikeq (formerly Sukkertoppen Fjord) towards Davis Strait in the west. The fjord makes three nearly perpendicular bends between steep mountains of nearly 2000 m altitude. There are a number of impressive glaciers along the route. Various bird mountains, including Taateraat, line the fjord's sides. The fjord, which is regarded as one of West Greenland's most picturesque, attracts cruise ships, local tourist boats, as well as local hunters and fishermen. Kim Leine, a now world-famous Danish-Norwegian author, published his book "The Prophets of the Eternity Fjord" in recent years, which has increased awareness of the fjord outside Greenland. Around 2008, there were proposals to build an aluminum smelter and in Maniitsoq and a hydroelectric power plant at the bottom of the Eternity Fjord, under the direction of the American corporation ALCOA. The ideas, however, have not yet been put into action.
