Arsuk Settlement
One of the larger settlements along the coast in South Greenland, Arsuk is located at the southern end of Sermersooq Municipality.
Arsuk is a settlement in south Greenland, belonging to the Sermersooq Municipality. It had 73 inhabitants in 2020, down from more than 300 in the 1990s. "Arsuk" means the beloved place in the Greenlandic language. The village is located on an island and the destinctive mountain, Kuunnaat, rises directly to the north of the village. The area hs been settled by both Inuit and the Norse. When cryolite mining took hold in Ivittuut in the Arsuk Fjord during the colonial area, Arsuk became a formal settlement, and the beautiful church was built in 1830. In 1987, the mines closed and Ivittuut was soon abandoned, ewhich also had an impact on Arsuk, and the population fell. Arsuk Settlement is still a captivating destination that offers a unique and enriching experience. This remote settlement, surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, provides visitors with a glimpse into the traditional Inuit way of life. From the moment you arrive, you are greeted by warm and welcoming locals who are eager to share their rich cultural heritage.
