Sarfannguit Monument

A sculpture in Sarfannguit celebrates the area's UNESCO World Heritage status, promoting Inuit cultural heritage and traditional knowledge.

Sarfannguit, a small settlement east of Sisimiut, is the site of a new sculpture celebrating the area’s UNESCO World Heritage status. The sculpture, also known as Qaammat Pavilion, was designed by Konstantin Ikonomidis, who has lived in nearby Sisimiut for several years and aims to ‘celebrate and promote the Inuit intangible cultural heritage and traditional knowledge of the environment.’ Choosing Sarfannguit as the home for the installation is no coincidence; the small settlement is the only still-active village in the UNESCO area, and it is hoped that Qaammat Pavilion will one day become a waypoint on a planned trail, which will link up to the Arctic Circle Trail. Visiting Sarfannguit and seeing the pavilion is possible between June and September on day trips from Sisimiut.
