The harbor in Narsarsuaq was built in the 1940s by the American military, and it was the first of its kind in Greenland. It was deep, enabling even large ships to dock at the harbor. Before, ships would be anchored in the fjords, and smaller boats would bring the cargo from the ships to the towns and settlements.
The harbor was theĀ first harbor in Greenland that could accommodate large ships from abroad.
A very thick rope ensures that icebergs don't enter the part of the harbor where the smaller boats are moored.
