UNESCO World Heritage - Kujataa

Kujataa is one of three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Greenland. It goes without saying that this is the greenest one!

Kujataa is one of three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Greenland. Of course, it goes without saying that this is the greenest one!

Since 2017, five parts of South Greenland have been on the UNESCO World Heritage list, collectively called Kujataa. The five areas are

  • Qassiarsuk
  • Igaliku
  • Sissarluttoq
  • Tasikuluulik
  • Qaqortukulooq

The arrival of farmers and hunters from Iceland in the tenth century marks the beginning of the cultural history of the Southern part of Greenland. The location epitomizes the spread of Norse civilization outside of Europe and the early arrival of agriculture in the Arctic.

Greenland got its name when Erik the Red arrived here in 982.

The cultural landscape is based on grazing, farming, and hunting for animals like seals and whales, and other marine mammals. Farming and the hunting traditions of the Inuit and the Viking colonies are visible all over the area.
