The trip to Point 660, named after its height above water level, is one of the most popular excursions in Greenland. The main point of this trip is that you get to walk on top of the huge ice sheet. It is incredible to stand here, knowing there are miles upon miles of ice in three directions. Even below you, there is just ice. Here, at the ice sheet's edge, the ice is not all that thick, but in the middle of the Greenland Ice Sheet, the ice is more than three (two miles) kilometers deep.

The Greenland Ice Sheet is a fantastic natural formation developed over millions of years as layers of compacted snow and ice, gasses, dust, and water accumulate. Although the landscape appears to be a frozen mass that has stood unchanged forever, the Greenland Ice Sheet is active like a living, breathing, evolving organism. The immense weight continues to push the ice outward toward the sea, which is why this so-called inland ice sheet can also be seen along much of Greenland's coast.
