Assaqutaq
A beautiful little ghost town is located near Sisimiut
In summer, you can go on a 3-hour boat trip to the abandoned village of Assaqutaq. It's an exciting historical site linking ancient Inuit culture and modern Greenlandic society. In the 1960s and 1970s, several small settlements in Greenland were abandoned as people chose to move to the larger towns to find work. Assaqutaq is one of these abandoned settlements. Today, it is used as a summer camp for the local primary schools. In June, the place comes very much alive as people from Sisimiut go fishing for ammassat (capelin), which is important as dog food and used as a snack. You can see the old fish factory, a lovely little cemetery, the house currently used as a summer camp, and the pretty old church. In the past 5-10 years, large numbers of humpback whales have been sighted close to the shores of Sisimiut. Here, they feed on ammassat (capelin). This means you have a very good chance of spotting these magnificent animals on this boat trip. Also, there are chances to view minke and fin whales.
